Primary Angioplasty 1994
1 January 1994

The state of the art treatment for major heart attacks is for patients to undergo coronary angioplasty within an hour of arriving at hospital. This has been shown to save lives and to improve the quality of life of survivors. Waikato Hospital established this service 24 hours a day in 1994 a full 10 years before any other hospital in New Zealand. This is an excellent example of how the Trusts actions have helped bring services to the public sooner than might otherwise have been the case. Seventeen hundred patients have undergone primary angioplasty since the service was established.
